Found clinging to his dead mother, Humphrey is one determined little lamb.
Rescued at just two weeks old, the teddy-bear-like appearance of this merino cross is deceptively cute. Humphrey is a lot more resilient than you might initially imagine. Despite being what many would call “too young to go it alone,” Humphrey took his survival into his own hooves. With determined grazing and a vivacious will to survive, he set about getting as much grass into his tiny belly as possible in hopes it would sustain him.
When he finally found his way to Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary, it was obvious he had been struggling to get all the nutrition he needed without his mother to provide for him. Edgar’s Mission quickly discovered that although Humphrey was still in fact just a baby, he had already lost his sucking reflex, meaning bottle feeding was going to prove quite the challenge.
Humphrey is not like most other lambs. When breakfast time comes, everyone charges out eagerly to get their bottle, while Humphrey strolls to the nearest patch of grass like a well-seasoned grazer. Wise beyond his years, his rough start in life has made him self-sufficient and reserved, even when all the other lambs are bleating wildly around him.
Thankfully, Humphrey is now living happily with his new friends at Edgar’s, and his darling personality has captured the hearts of everyone who has the pleasure of meeting him. Unfortunately, not all lambs are quite so lucky. Every year millions of lambs are killed for their flesh, living short, miserable lives before being sent to slaughter at just a few months old.
Separated from their mothers almost immediately after birth, they are then subjected to painful surgical procedures without anesthesia such as tail docking, castration and in some cases, mulesing.
Lambs, like all animals, are intelligent, loving, feeling individuals that want to live free from fear and pain. They too want a happy ending like Humphrey. If you care about animals, then show your compassion by choosing to reject animal cruelty and go vegan.
