It’s the New Year and thousands of people are starting it off by celebrating Veganuary, a global campaign that encourages people to go vegan in January. This year marks the third annual Veganuary, and it is definitely catching on. The organization is expecting about 50,000 people to pledge in 2016—a significant increase from when it began in 2014 with about 3,000 people. Originally launched in the UK, Veganuary was created as a way to motivate individuals to try a new lifestyle in January, a month fueled by resolutions and positive change.
A Mission to Save the Lives of Animals
Most people who are new to the vegan diet are taking the pledge for one of three reasons: to improve their health, take action against animal cruelty, and/or to help improve the environment.
In a recent interview with the Huffington Post, the non-profit organization’s co-founders, Matthew Glover and Jane Land, stated that last year people in 115 countries pledged to try veganism. They went on to further explain that by the end of the month, 71 percent of participants felt an improvement in their health, 65 percent learned something new about animal agriculture and a whopping 51 percent of participants said they are staying vegan permanently.
Additionally, Glover and Land reported that Veganuary 2015 saved the lives of 1,596,180 animals. You can also donate to the organization and help them spread their message online about the importance of how going vegan saves animals.

To make the transition into the plant-based diet as simple and easy as possible, Veganuary’s website offers a downloadable starter kit with essential information on the basics. You can find over 500 recipes to try out and share with others, like their speedy sweet potato quesadillas.

Jackson, Ellen DeGeneres, and Woody Harrelson are included on this list. Whether you are a newcomer or a long-time vegan, you can show your support by registering on their website and officially taking the pledge to make January Veganuary!
