The Vegin’ Out delivery
The old adage, “Never judge a book by its cover” has never been more true. When The Vegin’ Out package was left on my doorstep with warning labels on it, I wondered what I had gotten myself into. Hesitantly, I brought the box into my kitchen and opened it up. Behold! Styrofoam and white plastic bags of frozen food. Beware, the package does contain dry ice, so handle with care! The bags themselves were as unimpressive as my late grandmother’s mystery freezer items.
However, once I opened the white plastic bags, there were clear, sealed meals inside. The meals were complete! I had initially thought I was going to be tasked with putting together meals with actual ingredients and have to “cook.” But really, it’s as simple as either popping the meals into the microwave or cooking them with oil on the stove top. I chose the latter. I also chose to defrost the meals before cooking, which makes for a very speedy “cooking” session. Information printed on each bag tells you what the meal is, how to prepare it and the serving size, which is three.
The Vegin’ Out menu
The Vegin’ Out menu I received for the week included three entrees, four side dishes, a soup and cookies. For those with peanut allergies, check the ingredients carefully as most of the dishes contain nuts.
Entrees:
- Chana Masala with Cauliflower
- Pesto Tofu and Portobellos
- Pasta Puttanesca
Side Dishes:
- Lentil and Roasted Veggie Salad
- Sesame Broccoli
- Coconut Cashew Rice
- Kale Salad with Peanut Dressing
Soup:
- Sambar
Cookies:
- Chocolate Hazelnut Espresso
The Vegin’ Out Taste
Vegin’ Out puts a lot of thought and creativity into their menu, making something for every taste bud. The Coconut Cashew Rice was the big winner; even my picky 4-year-old loved it. The Pesto Tofu and Portobellos was the runner-up, followed by the Chana Masala with Cauliflower. On the other hand, the salad didn’t defrost as well as I would’ve liked, which made the texture a little chewy. The Sesame Broccoli defrosted the same way. The entrees themselves cooked up fresh and full of flavor. The cookies were a nice surprise, and they defrosted to oven-baked softness with a fluffy light texture.
The Vegin’ Out Verdict
Yum! I was not expecting to like everything, let alone everything, down to the cookies (my least favorite flavors are anything coffee or hazelnut). This was a true test to my willingness to experiment with food. I am not one to go beyond my limited vegan staples, so I really pushed myself to try everything. After the first three items, I was hooked and excited to try the next. I was not disappointed, and was able to take away a new outlook on food altogether. The flavors, textures and fun I had with my family experimenting was an experience in itself. So, the verdict: I give it four stars and say absolutely try it for a week. If you’re hooked, don’t worry, Vegin’ Out delivers!
