I having something to confess… I’m a bread-aholic. I’m not sure if there’s a technical term in the scientific community, but it was something I needed to get off my chest. For me, there’s nothing like a warm roll just out of the oven or a fresh everything bagel on a Sunday morning. I can’t resist bread baskets, even though it almost always ruins my appetite, and even though corn tortillas are delicious – sometimes they just can’t compete with a flour tortilla!
Keeping my love affair with bread products in mind, I also suffer from occasional “gluten overload.” When I finish that entire bagel and my stomach goes haywire or I eat one too many slices of bread and my brain fog won’t go away, I think to myself, why did I eat that last bite? Trying to remain mindful of this minor glitch in the system (I know many people suffer from much worst), I do attempt to regulate just how much gluten I’m actually eating, which is why when I was given the opportunity to try out BFree bread products sans both wheat and gluten, I couldn’t help but hope for the best.
BFree Foods was created to give bread lovers like me the chance to not only enjoy tasty, good-for-you breads, but to also provide that same delicious opportunity to those who are gluten, wheat, dairy, egg, nut, and soy-free! All of their products contain non-GMO ingredients, while providing nutrition with products that are high in fiber and low in unhealthy fats. Basically, it’s a bread product that’s completely vegan and free from all major allergens. Oh and there’s no added sugar! (A real pesky problem in many market products). So, this is all great – they’re vegan, low in sugar, low in calories and contain no saturated fat. Too many things left out that may equal for a recipe for something that’s not quite delicious; I thought the same thing, until I bit into one of their Brown Seeded Rolls and my doubts vanished.
The BFree Products I Indulged In
Like I said, I’m a big bread lover and the Brown Seeded Rolls did everything they needed to sop up my vegetable soup. I even used them to enclose my bean burger during a backyard BBQ the next day. With a mix of flours, fibers, proteins, flaxseeds and sunflower seeds, this roll is full of nutty flavor and boasts five grams of fiber – enough to keep you full for hours to come.
Next up was the Quinoa and Chia Seed Wrap with Teff and Flaxseeds. Yes, that’s a lot, but seriously, this was the best wrap I’ve ever had – and I’ve eaten a lot of them. At just 110 calories with less than 1 gram of sugar, the wraps had texture to keep things interesting (think of all of those flaxseeds, quinoa, and chia seeds spread out all over your sandwich) and enough flavor to stand up to any filling you’re in the mood for. In the future, this wrap will be a staple of my kitchen.
As for the rest of the BFree products, I really appreciated the thoughtful ingredients – fermented quinoa, sourdough, maize flour, millet flakes, potato flour, etc. – that were included in every product, from the Brown Seeded Sandwich Loaf to the Pita Bread. They’re also great after being frozen (I can attest to this) and their “white” breads will definitely fool your family into thinking that they’re eating calorie-rich bread products instead of nutrient-packed carbs. Think of them as a great addition to your Meatless Monday Meals or Vegan Before 6 Days.
As for me, you’ll probably still catch me eating my Sunday bagels from my local bakery, but you can be sure with some easy BFree bread switches in my kitchen, I’ll be enjoying a lot less bloating and a lot more nutrition all week long.
