With the warm months of summer approaching, many people are looking forward to making plans. SeaWorld is greatly mistaken as a place of fun. A specific problem that has been receiving more attention, fortunately, is the treatment of whales. Along with the other marine animals, orcas are exposed to endless risks from being held in captivity at SeaWorld. Please educate yourself on the negative life that SeaWorld creates for orcas. Then, you too can take action.
Orcas Are Trapped
Every living thing in this world has a specific habitat that they’re meant to live in. Orcas are tragically taken from the ocean and put into captivity. In captivity, tons of issues arise. Socialization, reproduction, behavior and health are all factors that are put into danger. Because of the separation from their families that orcas experience, their social skills are abandoned and they are forced to learn on their own. This can lead to behavioral problems that would never evolve if they remained free. In SeaWorld, there has been a history of violent acts that include orcas hurting each other and their trainers. However, there are zero records of wild orcas killing anyone.
What does that tell you? Captivity does nothing but damage the well-being of orcas. It damages them physiologically. There is no explanation why an orca would be expected to act normal after being brutally taken from their home where they swam freely to then being restricted in tanks that are the size of some swimming pools.
For more facts about what can happen during captivity, read scientist Naomi Rose’s report.
Families Are Destroyed
Us humans are not the only ones who need family. Like us, animals grow and learn from the support they receive from their parents. Orcas are horrifically captured for SeaWorld. Imagine being separated from your parents at a young age. Would you know how to act? How to survive? We would be physically and emotionally lost.
This may be overlooked but needs to be realized: orcas feel heartbreak just like the heartbreak we feel when we read these kind of stories, but worse. It’s common for orcas to spend their entire lives with their mothers. But, because of SeaWorld, orcas are being forced to forget what family feels like.
What Do I Tell My Kids?
Kids love places like SeaWorld. Parents bring their children to parks like SeaWorld because they want to see animals and they see no harm. Of course kids don’t know better, but it can be our job to teach children at a young age about animal rights. If kids become familiar with these rights, that is a step towards change. Something as simple as comparing your family to an orca family will make sense. Tell your children that whales love and need their parents as much as your children love and need you.
How You Can Help Orcas
Orcas are silently crying for help and it is up to us to try. First thing is first, do not visit these kind of parks. As each person pays to enter SeaWorld, animal exploitation is being supported. Stay updated with what happens with the news of SeaWorld. Letters can also be sent to various people and companies who support SeaWorld. I recommend that you watch BlackFish, a documentary that reveals what the captivity of orcas looks like on the inside. Watch the trailer below and let us know your thoughts on the orcas that are being deprived from their rights.
