Everyone has seen those intriguing soap bottles wrapped in words on the shelves of health stores, but what are they exactly? This magical stuff is called Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap and it can be used for anything from laundry detergent to vegan face wash.
Who Is Dr. Bronner?
A third generation certified master soap-maker, Emanuel Bronner was born in 1908 to a German-Jewish family. After moving to the United States in 1929, he eventually started the Dr. Bronner’s as we know it today. The company really began to take off in the 1960s when its thoughtful practices began to appeal to a wider audience. Bronner always saw himself as more of an activist than a businessman and fulfilled this purpose through the mission of his company. This now popular soap brand continues to operate independently and honors their founder by making products that care not only about the people who will use them, but also the impact they will have on the planet.
The History Behind Castile Soap
The name is derived from an all-vegetable based soap made in the Castile region of Spain from local olive oil. Today, castile means any vegetable-oil based soap. Dr. Bronner’s products are labeled as “pure-castile” which guarantees they do not contain blends of detergents that are harmful for the environment. All of Dr. Bronner’s castile soaps are certified vegan, made cruelty-free and created with limited impact to the environment.
What Can I Do With This Soap?
Dr. Bronner’s claims there are at least 18 different uses for their liquid castile soaps. The list includes face and body wash, shampoo, cleansing baths, shaving, toothpaste, foot baths, clearing congestion, cleaning dishes, washing clothes, mopping, all purpose cleaning, windows, toilet cleaning, fruit and vegetable rinse, dog washing and bug spray. The website offers quick recipes for the different uses of the soap, but here is something to get you started.
