Sometimes the combination of raw, vegan and cookie may give us pause. For when we think of raw vegan, we think of vegetables, sprouted grains, nuts, fruits, beans and not necessarily sweet delectable treats. When I was given the opportunity to review Coco-Roons, a vegan, raw and gluten free macaroon in two different flavors, I was happy to volunteer. I have a sweet tooth that I love to indulge, and vegan cookies are my major weakness.
The Origins
Wonderfully Raw Gourmet’s Delights’ creation was owed to founder Sequoia Cheney’s diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Sequoia successfully adapted her lifestyle to heal from the disease with organic cooking, and even took it a step further and became a professionally trained chef. In this process she realized her passion for pure ingredients, a healthy way of living and discovered a way to channel her drive by starting Wonderfully Raw Gourmet’s Delights. With her son, Eric Hara, who is also a chef, they sourced their ingredients from around the world supporting the organic and sustainable movement, developing a product line, including the vegan and gluten free Coco-Roons.
The Flavors
Wonderfully Raw Gourmet’s Delight Coco-Roons come in six delightful flavors: brownie, strawberry almond, lemon pie, vanilla maple, cacao nib and orange dreamsicle.
The Results
I sampled the mini versions of the brownie and lemon pie in perfect bite-sized pieces. I was impressed with the ingredients: dried unsweetened coconut*, almond flour,* unfiltered maple syrup*, cold-pressed coconut oil*, lemon zest*, vanilla extract*, Himalayan crystal salt and cacao instead of the lemon zest for the brownie. At first bite, the coconut was the first thing I tasted and the tartness of the lemon hit second. The texture was lightly dense, yet still a bit moist. The brownie flavor is a rich chocolate coconut version also with the same consistency.
At 80 calories per serving (3 mini cookies) these are healthy and yummy! The very best attribute about these amazing cookies are not only are they organic and gluten free, but they are vegan. The fact they are raw, vegan, organic, gluten-free, healthy and delicious make them a must have in my dessert choices!
